About Niwot

What in Niwot?

Niwot, pronounced " N  I(eye) wot," is a part of unincorporated Boulder County.

Niwot is named after Chief Niwot, an Arapahoe Indian Chief that lived in the area.   The story's say that Chief Niwot's tribe would stand on Haystack Mountain to watch for buffalo.  The story's also say that Chief Niwot put a "curse" on the area.  The curse states that once you leave the area, you will always want to come back to your "home."

We at Niwot Real Estate, can attest to this curse as many of our clients who have moved away from Niwot, have moved back with loving arms.

The last census stated that niwot has about 3500 residences.

Most of Niwot is surrounded by Boulder County Open Space or conservation easements.

Niwot is not really a town, we are considered unincorporated Boulder County. The county commissioners, the Boulder County Sheriff, and Mountain View Fire department take care of Niwot.
